Abstract

A process for the production of foamed polyester polyurethanes comprises reacting polyisocyanates in the presence of a wetting agent, water, and a tertiary amine with polyesters derived from a glycol on the one hand and on the other a mixture of unsaturated fatty acids and their polymerization products which consists of above 10 and up to 50 parts by weight of monocarboxylic acids with 14 to 22 carbon atoms, 10 to 70 parts by weight of dicarboxylic acids with 36 to 44 carbon atoms, 10 to 70 parts by weight of tricarboxylic acids with 54 to 60 carbon atoms, and up to 30 parts by weight of tetracarboxylic acids and more highly polymerized carboxylic acids with more than 60 and up to 88 carbon atoms, in the molecule, which polyesters have a mean molecular weight of 750 to 6,000, a hydroxyl number of 25 to 150 and an acid number below 4. The polyester may be mixed with polyalkylene glycols before reaction with the polyisocyanates. The polyester can be one obtained by alcoholysis with the glycol of a mixture of esters of the carboxylic acids with a more volatile monohydric alcohol proportion of the initial esterifying groups may remain and then the corresponding parts of the molecule act as internal plasticizers. The carboxylic acid mixtures can be obtained by heating to 200 DEG C., especially in the presence of water and mineral clays, unsaturated acids such as linoleic, linolenic, eleaostearic litanic acids, unsaturated acids from marine oils, single unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic and palmitoleic acids, conjugated unsaturated fatty acids, castor oil fatty acids, Polyesters can be formed with ethylene, propylene, diethylene, tri-ethylene and higher polyethylene glycols, 1, 2-propylene glycol, poly-1, 2-propylene glycol, and trimethylene, butylene and neopentylene glycols. In the preparation of the foamed polyurethanes low boiling liquids can be added as additional foaming agents. Various orders of mixing the reactants can be used. Fillers such as chalk, heavy spar, kieselguhr, carbon black or coloured pigments can be added to the reaction mixture. In examples the polyesters are prepared from (A) ethylene glycol and polymerized fatty acids of linseed oil; (B) diethylene glycol and a polycondensation product of tung oil fatty acid methyl esters; (C) diethylene glycol and soya oil fatty acid methyl ester polymerization product; (D) ethylene glycol and a polymerization product of dehydrated castor oil fatty acid methyl ester. Foaming is effected by mixing the reactants at high shearing speeds or in a spray pistol and casting or spraying the mixture. Other specified components of the mixture are lecithin, alkyl phenol polyglycol ether, chalk, carbon black, 4, 41-diphenylmethane diisocyanate or 2, 4-toluylene diisocyanate.
