Abstract

In a process of making cerium hydride, cerium chips are heated to 600 DEG F. in an evacuated molybdenum resistance furnace, the furnace is then back-filled with high purity hydrogen, obtained from the decomposition of uranium hydride, to a pressure of 3 p.s.i. The furnace is slowly cooled, the hydrogen is drawn off and the furnace is then back-filled with argon. A mixture of columbium and cerium chips may be hydrided in a similar manner. The crushed hydride is mixed with reactive and refractory metal powders compacted and sintered to form a non-consumable arc-melting or arc-welding electrode (see Division C7).ALSO:A sintered non-consumable arc melting or arc welding electrode consisting of cerium and one or more of the reactive and refractory metals Ti, Zr, Cr, V, Rh, Hf, Ru, Cb, Ir, Mo, Ta, Os, Re and W is made from a powder mixture of hydrided cerium and the metal powder which is compacted, heated slowly to a temperature below the sintering temperature to effect dehydriding and finally sintering the dehydrided compact. The sintered electrode contains 3-25 volume per cent of cerium which is hydrided in vacuum with hydrogen at 600 DEG F. The metal powder may be mixed with the cerium prior to or after hydriding, the hydrided powder is then crushed under argon to minus 325 mesh, compacted under argon and then heated slowly in vacuum to 1400 DEG F. in the case of the cerium hydride metal powder compact or to 1600 DEG F. for the compact in which the cerium and the metal powder were hydrided together. The compact is then sintered in vacuum at 2950 DEG F. for 1 1/2 hours and may be further densified by cold curing and swaging or resintering at 3600 DEG F. in a tungsten resistance furnace. The following alloys were arc melted under vacuum using the ceriated electrodes: Cb-5% Ti, Cb-5% Zr, Cb-5% Hf, Cb-5% Mo, Cb-5% V.
