Abstract

A solid resinous product comprises an epoxide resin and a hardener therefor present together in a homogeneous but only slightly cross-linked state. The hardener is an organic anhydride, phenol, urea or melamine resin. The composition contains no organic metal compound. The product which is preferably in the form of a powder or granules is formed by mixing melts of the ingredients, rapidly cooling the mixed melt, and comminuting the solid product. Fillers, e.g. quartz meal, graphite, metal powder, glass fibre reinforcement esterless, dyestuffs, or foaming inhibitors may be included in the compositions which may be cured by heat treatment, if desired in a mould e.g. by centrifugal action in a tube mould. Alternatively the product may be shaped by casting or sintering processes. The epoxide resins used are condensates of epichlorhydrin with polyhydric phenols. In Example 1 the hardener is phthalic anhydride. In Example 2, a butylized phenolformaldehyde resin is used with phthalic anhydride. In Example 3, quartz meal and titanium dioxide are stirred into molten epoxide resins, and the mixture then further mixed with molten phthalic anhydride and cooled.
