Abstract

The invention comprises bismuth pectinate and aqueous gels or suspensions thereof. The compound may be prepared by treating pectin, preferably in aqueous solution, with an aqueous solution of a bismuth salt, e.g. bismuth, nitrate or subnitrate, thereby precipitating bismuth pectinate as an aqueous gel. The reaction is preferably effected in presence of an inhibitor for hydrolysis of bismuth salts, e.g. glycerol or nitric acid. The nitric acid, if used, is more than 1, and less than 3 times the concentration of elementary bismuth in the reaction mixture. The aqueous gel of bismuth pectinate may be dehydrated by washing with, e.g. ethanol or acetone, to yield a powder, which is insoluble in water and organic solvents but soluble in dilute acids. The bismuth pectinate, containing e.g. 10-30% by weight of bismuth, may be used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations (see Division A5).ALSO:Pharmaceutical and cosmetic compositions contain bismuth pectinate (a bismuth salt of pectin) (Division C3). For therapeutic use, e.g. in treatment of gastro-intestinal ailments, the bismuth pectinate composition may contain pharmaceutical carriers, excipients or other physiologically active substances, and may be in the form of e.g. powders, syrups or elixers. Granulates may be prepared in which the bismuth pectinate is associated with sugar, gums, dyestuffs or perfumes. For peroral administration, e.g. in sachets, as stomach and intestinal adsorbants and protectors, the preferred dosage unit is 0.5 to 10 g. Bismuth pectinate may also be formulated as gels, colloidal suspensions, milks or creams, containing also mineral salts and wetting agents, mucilages, gelatines or glycerol. Bismuth pectinate disperses in strong electrolytic solutions to form non-greasy cosmetic creams.
