Abstract

976,767. Opening oysters. H. BERTRAND. June 15, 1962, No. 23076/62. Heading A2U. The shells of bivalves are opened by cyclically pulling the valves away from each other and then releasing them to impart fatigue to the closing muscle. An oyster P is placed, flat valve up, between suction cups C, H having, respectively, a resilient cushion D and a resilient lip I, and connecting tubes F, J to suction manifolds G, K. Reciprocating movement is imparted to the cup H by a disc O on a rotated shaft (not shown) having a connecting rod N hingedly attached to an arm L extending from the cup to a pivot M on a standard A. A plurality of such devices can be arranged side-by-side (Fig. 2 not shown).
