A coin-freed machine for dispensing sandwiches, confectionery &c. contained in pallets 1 arranged in stacked non-interlocking deposition in the machine has means for presenting the pallets one at a time to the customer upon insertion of a coin so that the vendable article can be withdrawn, the pallet however being prevented from withdrawal from the machine. The pallets 1 are stacked between guides 5 above a coin-freed drawer 8, the lowermost pallet resting by its lip 2 on guide supports 3. After a coin has been inserted, the drawer can be pulled along a channel 11 to carry the lowermost pallet to a position where the contents of the pallet are accessible to the customer; in this position, the pallet is prevented from being removed from the machine by overhanging lips disposed along the upper edges of the channel. During this movement, the pallet is caused to slide along the supports 3 and depress catches 6 against the pressure of springs 7 until the trailing edge of the lip 2 becomes clear of the catches. On the return movement of the drawer, the empty pallet is deflected under the supports 3 by the catches so that it will be free to fall into the lower portion of the machine; simultaneously, the stack of pallets is caused to descend until the next lowermost pallet rests upon the supports 3 ready for the next vending sequence.
