Abstract
The invention comprises benzenesulphonyl ureas of the formula <FORM:0976533/C1/1> wherein R is hydrogen, chlorine or bromine or a C1-4 alkyl or alkoxy group and R1 represents a C3-8 alkyl, C5-8 cycloalkyl or C6-8 cycloalkylalkyl group or a phenylalkyl group the alkyl portion of which contains 1-3 carbon atoms excluding N-benzenesulphonyl-N1-n-butoxy urea and its p-methyl- and p-chloro-derivatives); salts of the benzenesulphonyl ureas of the above general formula (without exclusion) with inorganic and organic bases yielding physiologically tolerable salts, e.g. alkali-metal, alkaline-earth metal, ammonium and diethylaminoethanol salts; and pharmaceutical preparations for the oral treatment of diabetes mellitus comprising compounds of the above general formula (without exclusion), or their salts, in admixture or conjunction with a carrier, preferably in the form of tablets. The compounds are prepared by reacting an O-alkyl-hydroxylamine of the formula R1.O.NH2 with the appropriate benzenesulphonyl isocyanate, benzenesulphonyl-carbamyl chloride, benzenesulphonylcarbamic esters, benzenesulphonyl urea, N-benzenesulphonyl-N1-acyl (e.g. acetyl)-ureas, N-benzenesulphonyl-N1,N1 -disubstituted (e.g. diphenyl)-ureas or N,N1-bis-benzenesulphonyl-urea. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 896,678.
