Abstract

Polypyrrolidone, which has a basic inorganic retained ash content of less than 0.005% by weight, is prepared by polymerizing 2-pyrrolidone under substantially anhydrous conditions in the presence of a quaternary ammonium hydroxide catalyst, e.g. of formula R1R2R3R4NOH, wherein R1, R2 and R3 are methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl or hexyl groups and R4 is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group. Catalysts specified include tetramethylammonium, benzyltrimethylammonium, and phenyltrimethylammonium hydroxides, and may be present in a proportion of 0.25 to 10 mole per cent. An acyl activator such as acetylpyrrolidone may be added, and polymerization effected at 25 DEG -80 DEG C. Specifications 731,294, 749,332 and 754,944 are referred to.
