Abstract

976,421. Laying pipes. E. A. YATES, J. E. YATES, and A. C. YATES. Oct. 25, 1963 [July 27, 1962], No. 28852/62. Heading F2P. In a method of laying underground piping, such as water mains, a mole plough 10 is pulled along the required line for a convenient distance to form a pilot hole H in the ground and at the same time pay out a cable 25 attached to a larger mole 26 at the start of the pilot hole, and when a sufficient length of pilot hole has been formed with the cable laid in it the mole plough is allowed to come to rest and the pull is transferred to the cable so as to draw the larger mole along the pilot hole, enlarging the bore thereby, the piping being coupled to the mole 26 and drawn through the enlarged bore in the wake thereof. As shown, the cable passes over a pulley 17, through a guide member 18 and over a pulley 20, the mole plough being drawn over the ground by a cable 27.
