A hand tool for removing valve spring retaining cotters 9 from a valve assembly in which the pressure exerted by a spring 13 is transmitted to the valve stem 8 via a retaining collar 4 comprises a body portion 2 having a surface 3 for engaging the collar and a recess 6 so dimensioned that when the surface is engaged with the collar and pressure applied to compress the spring, the bottom of the recess dislodges the cotters from their seat 10 so that they fall into a position in which they are unable to re-engage with the seat when the tool is retracted. The tool is provided with a stem portion 1 which may be struck in order to release the cotters and the body portion 2 with a flange 5 for locating the collar. In a modification, the recess is made smaller in diameter in order to enable refitting the cotters in their seat. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, a shank 1a is provided with a cotter removing portion 2a at one end and a cotter fitting portion 2b at the other end, a tommy bar 18, having a head portion 18a which may be struck during the cotter removal operation, being normally housed in a bore 7a in the shank. In modifications of the latter construction the shank may be made from tube and provided with detachable working heads. Removable inserts may be provided for varying the size of the recess.
