Abstract
Benzoisothiazolones of formula <FORM:0976028/C1/1> where R is a straight or branched C1-C17 alkyl group, which may be substituted, or a C6-C10 aryl or aralkyl group, which may be substituted. The compounds may be made by condesing o-chloro-thiolbenzoyl chloride with an amide NH2COR or by treating the sodium salt of benzoisothiazolone with an acyl halide or acid anhydride. The aralkyl radicle is preferably a C1, or C2-C4, straight or branched alkyl radicle which contains a phenyl substituent which may have one or more nitro groups or halogen atoms. The aryl radicle preferably is a phenyl or naphthyl radicle which may contain one or more alkyl, alkoxy, carbalkoxy or nitro-groups or halogen atoms. When R is an alkyl group it preferably has 3-17 C atoms. Representative of specified products are acetyl-, isobutyryl-, pelargonyl-, o-chlorobenzoyl-, p-methoxybenzoyl, m-ethylbenzoyl, o-carbomethoxybenzoyl, a -naphthoyl, 4-nitro-a -naphthoyl-, 3-chloro-b -naphthoyl and b -phenylpropionyl-benzoisothiazolones. The compounds are plant fungicides, (see Division A5). Examples are given of the preparation of the compounds and their use as fungicides.ALSO:Fungicidal compositions contain a benzoisothiazolone of formula <FORM:0976028/A5-A6/1> where R is a straight, or branched, C1-C17 alkyl group, which may be substituted, or a C6-C10 aryl or aralkyl group, which may be substituted, and an inert diluent or carrier. The aralkyl radicle is preferably a C1, or C2-C4, straight or branched alkyl radicle which contains a phenyl substituent which may have one, or more, nitro groups or halogen atoms. The aryl radicle is preferably a phenyl or naphthyl radicle which may contain one, or more, alkyl, alkoxy, carbalkoxy or nitro groups or halogen atoms. When R is an alkyl group it preferably has 3-17 C atoms. The compositions are plant fungicides being effective against e.g. downy oidium, rust and Botrytis Spp. They are preferably formulated as wettable powders, or powders for dry pulverization. Kaolin, talc and bentonite are specified inert fillers. Dispersants are preferably anionic surfactants e.g. sodium dodecylbenzene- and lauryl-sulphonates. Other compounds having parasiticidal activity may be present. In Examples (5) and (6) powders are made from talc and N-a - ethyl - butyryl - and N - p - nitrobenzoyl-benzoisothiazolone respectively and wettable powders are obtained in (7) from N-caprylylbenzoisothiazolone, kaolin and sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate and (8) N-a -ethylbutyrylbenzoisothiazolone, attapulgite and sodium butylnaphthalenesulphonate. The benzoisothiazolones are described in Division C2.
