Abstract

A body of absorbent material, of ogival shape and mounted on a supporting stem, for use in applying medicaments to the interior of a cavity, is coated with a thin layer of mucilaginous substance which, when moistened, becomes slippery and acts as a lubricant. Suitable mucilaginous substances are gelatin, agar-agar, guargum, alginates and carboxymethyl cellulose. Substances, such as glucose or hydrocortisone, may be added to the lubricating layer to improve absorption of medicament by the mucous membrane.
