Abstract

Cured or curable masses containing from 3 to 35% by weight of polyester resin are prepared by adding a catalyst to a homogeneous liquid mixture of an unsaturated polyester resin dissolved in a copolymerizable monomer, and mixing under vacuum a dried inert substance and said catalyst-containing liquid until a pasty and hydrorepellent mass is obtained. The mass obtained is essentially composed of polyester resin, inert filler, pigments, catalyst and other additives which may be added to the mass in the form of inserts. The inert fillers which may be mineral, metallic, vegetable or synthetic materials in fibrous, powdered or granular form used in the examples are powdered marble and metallic fillers. If the desired thickness of the final product is 1.5 cm. or less, the treated mass formed after mixing under vacuum is passed through an extruder in order to preform it and the preformed mass is poured into moulds which have been heated to 105 DEG to 110 DEG C. The moulds are then subjected to vibration to eliminate any air between the mould and the conglomerate surfaces. To effect polymerization it may then be necessary to place the moulds in a stove. If the thickness of the material is greater than 1.5 cms. the mass is poured directly into cold moulds which may be heated if necessary to hasten the polymerization.
