[Also in Divisions B8 and H2] A plate-type foodstuff freezer or defroster comprises upper and lower plates 10, 11, through which refrigerant or a heating liquid is circulated and a chain driven slat-type conveyer 16 the upper run of which is disposed between the plates 10, 11 so as to convey articles of foodstuff 17 therebetween for freezing or defrosting. The upper plate 10 is supported by hydraulic rams 15 mounted at the four corners and adapted to raise or lower the plate. In operation, the conveyer moves the articles 17 forward by a preset distance with the cooling plates 10, 11 apart; the conveyer then stops and the upper plate is lowered and pressed against the articles for a predetermined period after which the plate 10 is again moved to the raised position and the cycle repeated. When used as a freezer a defrosting heater 18 and a drying heater 19 are fitted to prevent the accumulation of ice on the surface of the slats.
