975,255. Magrietostrictive devices. CAVITRON ULTRASONICS Inc. Nov. 28, 1960 [Nov. 27, 1959], No. 40740/60. Heading H4J. A magnetostrictive receiver comprises a rod or wire 18 of magnetostrictive material adapted to be rigidly secured to a vibrating body, and a separate member comprising a magnetic shell 48 and a pick-up coil 20 within which member the rod can vibrate freely. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the rod 18 is polarized by direct current in coil 20 derived by rectification from an alternating current source. Alternatively the rod may be polarized by a permanent magnet. The induced e.m.f. is used to drive a voltmeter 44 after amplification at 40. The magnetic circuit of the rod 18 is amplified by the shell 48 comprising two discs 50, 52 of ferrite recessed to take the coil 20 and held together by an aluminium housing 62. In Figs. 4, 5 the housing includes a permanent magnet 90 and the magnetostrictive element 18a is rectangular in section. The element 18 may be tubular. A magnetostrictive element 18c, Fig. 7, in the form of a dumb-bell is mounted within a ferrite cylinder 10c by means of rubber rings 98 fitting annular grooves 10 in the two quarter-wave cylindrical ends 92, 94 of the element. The coil 20 is wound around the neck of the element.
