Abstract

A metal cleaning composition comprises, by weight (a) 25-90 parts water, (b) 0.57-95 parts of an emulsifier, (c) 0-55 parts of a hydrocarbon solvent, (d) up to 5 parts of an oleophilic amorphous thickener dispersible in (c), (e) 0-50 parts abrasive, and (f) 0.5-5 parts of a sequestering agent for removing oxides and foreign matter from the metal surface. (b) may be a morpholine salt of a C12-18-fatty acid, a C12-18-primary amine acetate, ethylene oxide condensates with a fatty acid or an alkylphenol, amino fatty acids, di-n-octyl sodium sulphsuccinate, or sodium sec. alkyl sulphate, but is preferably obtained by mixing in situ 0.7-4 parts caustic soda, 0.5-28 parts oleic acid, 0-63 parts sulphonated red oil and 0-60 parts 26 DEG B<\>ae ammonia. (c) is preferably kerozene. (d) is suitably an alkali metal, aluminium, zinc or lead oleate, the dimethyldioctadecyl salt of montmorillonite clay, colloidal silica or aluminium naphthenate. (e) is generally finely divided silica and (f) is usually citric or oxalic acid. The composition may also contain pine oil, and if it is to be used as an aerosol, is packaged under pressure with 0.1-25% of its weight of a propellant, e.g. compressed nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, isobutane, nitrogen, or air, or chlorofluorinated hydrocarbons, especially a mixture of 45% dichlorodifluoromethane and 55% dichlorotetrafluoroethane in an amount of 1 part to 4 parts of cleaning composition.
