Abstract

974,911. Valves. CRANE CO. July 16, 1962, No. 27206/62. Heading F2V. A fluid control ball valve comprises a casing formed of a cylindrical tube 2, Fig. 1, a tubular member 7 attached transversely to the casing, a spherical closure member 29 having a fluid passage 31 therethrough and a diameter such that it may be passed into the casing tube from one end thereof, means 13 in the member 7 to rotate the closure member, back-up members 35 disposed in the ends of the casing, seat rings 42 carried on the back-up members, and resilient fluid seals 45 around the seat rings in contact with the closure member. The means 13 consists of a steam which is connected to a handle 22 limited to 90 degrees rotation by a slot 19 and pin 18 and has flats 27 to engage a slot in the closure member. Each member 35 is screwed into the casing and is fitted with 0-rings 37, 44, a slight radial clearance being left between it and the seat ring to enable fluid pressure to hold the seals 45 against the closure member. In Fig. 3, each back-up ring has a flange 51 engaged by a flange 53 slipped over the tubular casing 48 and by a flange 56 welded, brazed or soldered to a pipe section 62. In Fig. 4, each back-up ring is secured by a series of set-screws 73 permitting limited axial movement and engages a pipe flange 78 through a gasket 76, studs 81 connecting the pipe flanges together. Fig. 5 shows a back-up ring 82 located between a shoulder 84 in the casing and a split ring 87. A weld 92 and a weld 95, having a ground face to engage a gasket 96, secure a flange 91 to the casing. In a further modification, one of the back-up members is integral with the casing.
