Abstract

Tryptamine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0974894/C1/1> (wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, a C1- 3 alkyl or alkoxy group or a trifluoromethyl group and R1 represents a C1- 3 alkyl group or a phenyl group, but excluding the case in which R1 is methyl and R is 7-methyl, 7-methoxy or 7-chloro) are prepared by reacting a 3-hydroxy-3-substituted oxindole compound of the general formula <FORM:0974894/C1/2> with hydroxylamine and reducing the resulting oxime by reaction in the presence of an anhydrous non-hydroxylic organic solvent with lithium aluminium hydride or with a complex oxidizable metal borohydride in the presence of aluminium chloride, and decomposition of the resulting complex with water or an aqueous medium. The products may be converted into acid addition salts. 3-Acetonyl -3- hydroxy -7- trifluoromethyloxindole is prepared by reacting 7-trifluoromethylisation with acetone in the presence of diethylamine.
