Abstract

974,887. Rolling; brazing. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 28, 1962 [Oct. 11, 1961], No. 36461/61. Headings B3M and B3R. [Also in Division G6] A method of making finned nuclear fuel elements comprises inserting fuel in a plain tube, fin-rolling the tube to form fins on its exterior and to bring the tube interior into close contact with the fuel. The canning material is preferably magnesium alloy and end plugs are welded and screwed into the tube ends prior to rolling. End profile machining and re-welding may be carried out after completion of the rolling. The surface of the fuel element may be profiled (e.g. with annular grooves) in order to provide keying with the can; the keying may be improved by placing a material such as aluminium or silicon between the surfaces, which on heating will alloy with both the fuel and can.
