The surface condition of a material is estimated by scanning the material photo-electrically as it travels along a conveyer. Each scan produces a long pulse. Each defect produces a pulse proportional to the width of the defect. Differentiation, rectification and gating results in the elimination of all signals other than a pulse at the detection of each defect in a scan. Such pulses are counted for a predetermined length of material to give an indication of the quality of that length. A printer is operated and the counter is reset. The speed of scan and the speed of the conveyer can be related. U. S. A. Specifications 2,999,944, 3,020,033 and 3,020,034 are referred to.
