Abstract

<PICT:0974534/C3/1> Foamable plastic segments are annealed by complete immersion in hot water. The segments are produced by cooling and cutting an extruded mixture of a thermo-plastic and a blowing agent. The temperature of annealing should be 50-90 DEG C. In a particular embodiment the segments, 43 from a cutter (not shown) are washed into rectangular tank 12 at its left end. They are moved along the tank by the cleats, 18, attached to belt, 14, which is driven by motor 32 through speed control 34 and reduction gear 36. At the right hand end the segments leave by spillway 17 which also ensures the liquid is maintained at a constant head. The belt assembly can be removed for cleaning.
