Abstract

Carbides are produced by reacting the vapours of a metallic halide or silicon halide with a gaseous hydrocarbon within the temperature range 1500-3000 DEG C. at pressures of 1 mm.-200 mm. of mercury. Specified metals are tantalum, niobium, hafnium, titanium, zirconium, tungsten, molybdenum, thorium and uranium, and methane, ethane, propane and benzene are specified as hydrocarbon gases. Powders of the carbides are produced by using pressures of 100-200 mm. of mercury, and superior hardness is obtained if 1-100 mm. pressure is employed both processes employing the temperature range as above. Substrates placed in the reaction chamber may be coated with carbide, preferably at 1700-2500 DEG C. and 1 m.m.-200 m.m. pressure of mercury.ALSO:<PICT:0974447/C6-C7/1> In a process for coating substrates with metallic carbides (including silicon carbide) the surface of the substrate is contacted with the vapours of a hydrocarbon gas and a metallic halide, e.g. a chloride, at temperature of 1700-2500 DEG C. and at a pressure of 1-200 mm. of mercury. Specified metals are Ta, Nb, Hf, Ti, Si, Zr, W, Mo, Th and U. Methane, ethane, propane and benzene are specified hydrocarbon gases. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 provides an evaporator 12 in which a metallic halide is heated by heating jacket 17, the vapours passing out through heated tube 14 to flowmeter 16 and control valve 19. The hydrocarbon gas is fed through heated tube 21 to the central feed tube 23 where mixing of the vapours from tube 21 and control valve 19 occurs. The gases are then injected by injector 24 into a conventional furnace 43 having a suitable substrate 44 in a deposition tube 42.
