Abstract

974,445. Laminates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 31, 1963 [Aug. 31, 1962], No. 33503/62. Heading B5N. A laminate comprises a shaped or unshaped film of amorphous polyethylene terephthalate bonded to a synthetic thermoplastic resin such as polythene, polypropylene, nylon or polyvinyl chloride. The surface of the polyethylene terephthalate film may be treated, e.g. by sulphuric acid, hot nitric acid, trichloracetic acid, chromic acid, halogens, isocyanates, ozone, high voltage electric stress and corona discharge in presence of oxygen, ionizing radiations such as ultra-violet, X-, α-, #- or γ-radiation or flame treatment, or the surface may be coated with an alkyl titanate such as tetrabutyl ethyl titanate, 2-ethyl hexyl titanate or titanium acetyl acetonate. The laminate may be shaped after bonding or. the polyethylene terephthalate film may be shaped by vacuum moulding and the thermoplastic resin applied by placing the shaped film in a mould and injection or compression moulding the thermoplastic resin at temperatures above 300‹ C. The laminate may be used for the manufacture of tanks and containers for organic liquids, e.g. petrol.
