Abstract

974,316. Handling radio-active material. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 24, 1963 [Oct. 4, 1962], No. 37655/62. Heading B4Q. Protective equipment permitting maintenance operations to be carried out in an alpha contaminated cell 7 comprises a protective chamber 1 in which an operator may stand and move freely. The chamber 1 is formed of flexible P.V.C. sheet and has a cylindrical wall 2, roof 3 and floor 4, the operator entering the chamber through a flexible duct 5 opening into a port 6 in the cell wall. The upper part of the wall 2 is of transparent P.V.C. to form a circular window 8, the window having six ports 9 receiving gloves 10. Straps 13 on the floor 4 are engaged by the feet of the operator to enable the chamber to be walked about the cell. The chamber 1 and duct 5 are held inflated by atmospheric pressure since the interior of the cell 7 is below that pressure, the operator being supplied with air through an air line.
