Abstract
974,245. Negative resistance pulse regenerators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Aug. 4, 1961, No. 28475/61. Heading H3T. [Also in Division H1] A pulse transmission line constructed as a cable (see Division H1), the equivalent circuit of which is shown in Fig. 2, comprises negative resistance elements 16a-16d with the V-I characteristic shown in Fig. 1 and operates as follows. Bias voltage V c is applied across lines 13, 14 to charge up capacitors 10a-10d. On receipt at 15a of a pulse of sufficient magnitude to raise the voltage across element 16a to Vt, the element is triggered to its low resistance state and discharges capacitor 10a, giving rise to a pulse which via coupling capacitor 17a triggers the succeeding negative resistance element 16b and so on. To prevent reflection of pulses the recharging time of capacitors 10 is arranged so that each one is not sufficiently recharged for triggering until the pulse has been transmitted through at least two succeeding stages. The line may be branched, and may be made to operate as a delay line, a pulse shaper or a form of data store.
