Abstract

973,506. Disc brakes. LICENTIA PATENTVERWALTUNGS-G.m.b.H. March 7, 1961, No. 8281/61, Headings F2E and F2F. A disc brake is operated by spring means 19 when an armature 16 of an electromagnet 17 is de-energized, the spring means 19 actuating a piston 15 of a master cylinder device 22 for applying hydraulic fluid under pressure to brake pistons 4 arranged one on each side of the brake disc to actuate friction pads 8 into frictional contact with the brake disc 2 secured to a shaft of an electric motor. Wear of the brake pads is automatically compensated for by flow of hydraulic fluid from the reservoir 20 to the brake side of the piston in the cylinder 12 through an opening 23 when the piston 15 is drawn downwardly to its position corresponding to the electromagnet being energized. An inspection window or gauge may be provided for observing the level of the brake fluid in the reservoir. Alternatively a float may be operable in the reservoir to contact an electrical contact device which is made to operate when maximum permissible brake wear has occurred.
