Abstract

973,465. Evaporating liquids; concentrating phosphoric acid. UNION OIL CO. OF CALIFORNIA. Jan. 14, 1963, No. 1642/63. Heading B1B. Corrosive liquids, such as aqueous phosphoric acid, are concentrated by passing the liquid through line 14 into zone A of crucible 5 where the liquid is mixed with hot combustion gases discharged from nozzle 4, having a convergent/ divergent passageway 10, at the lower end of a dip tube 3 which contains a fuel burner 11 disposed so that the flame of burner does not impinge on the nozzle. The mixture of hot gas and liquid flows up annulus B, and enters detrainment zone C. The concentrated liquid is withdrawn through lines 26. The gas stream, containing water vapour, passes out through line 17 where it is washed by water spray 18 and passed through baffles 20, to remove large droplets of entrained liquid, the gases are then treated with a further water spray 23, and passed to the discharge-stack via a series of annular discs 28 made of felt or glass fibres. Separated liquid is withdrawn through lines 21 and 24. The lower portion of the nozzle 4 is cooled by passing cooling fluid through an annular chamber 9 in the nozzle. Fuel, such as producer gas, water gas, Diesel oil or kerosene, is supplied to the burner 11 through line 12, and the fuel is ignited in air or oxygen by a spark means through ignition wire 32. The temperature of the combustion gases is controlled by introducing cool air or recycled stack gases through line 25. When used for concentrating phosphoric acid, the temperature of the combustion gases is regulated to between 1000 and 2000 ‹F. prior to contacting the acid. The temperature of the acid in annulus B is maintained at about 430 ‹F. by controlling the feed-rate of the acid. Crucible 5 and dip-tube 3 may be made of graphite. The upper end of the metal shell is protected by a liner made of graphite, polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, or epoxy resin. The treatment of sulphuric acid and salt solutions is mentioned. If desired, the lower part of the nozzle may be made of material which is permeable to the cooling fluid, so that the cooling fluid diffuses into the nozzle passageway and exerts a washing action.
