Abstract
A liquid polymer containing organo-metallic groups has the formula:- <FORM:0973318/C3/1> to <FORM:0973318/C3/2> wherein:-M, M1, M2 are lead, tin, mercury, gallium, thallium, indium, platinum or germanium and M1 and M2 may be the same or different metals; n, n1, n2 are the valences of metals M, M1, and M2 respectively and are between 2 and 4; R, R1, R2 are alkyl, branched alkyl, aryl, alkanyl, aralkyl or alicyclic groups and where n is 3 or 4 the Rs may be the same or different and each of the R1 or R2 groups may be the same as or different from the other groups; X is a polymer chain. The polymer may be obtained by reacting polymers containing carboxyl groups with the corresponding organo-metallic oxides or hydroxides. The exemplified polymer is a copolymer of butadiene and acrylic acid, although methacrylic, maleic, fumaric and itaconic acids are also specified. Other monomers may be used instead of butadiene. The organo-metallic polymers may themselves be cross-linked by further reaction, for example with 2-methyl aziridinyl phosphine oxide and diphenyl methane-4, 41-dicyclopropyleneurea.
