Abstract

Expanded shaped articles are produced by plasticizing a finely-divided expandable thermo-plastic containing an expanding agent in the cylinder of a screw injection moulding machine at temperatures above the softening point of the plastic and at a pressure at least equal to the pressure of the expanding agent at the prevailing temperature, and introducing the plasticized plastic through a nozzle into a mould from which air can escape, the volume of unexpanded plastic being less than the volume of the mould, and interrupting the communication between the plasticizing cylinder and the mould by closing the nozzle after the plastic has been introduced. Expanded articles of thermoplastics, e.g. polystyrene, styrene co-polymers, impact-resistant polystyrene made by polymerizing monomeric styrene and rubber, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polisobutylene, polyamides, polyurethanes and polyvinyl carbazoles may be prepared. The expanding agent may be a hydrocarbon, halohydrocarbon, ammonium bicarbonate, ammonium citrate, sodium bicarbonate, a mixture of an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate and an organic acid, azo compounds, nitroso compounds and hydrazine derivatives. Examples relate to the foaming of polystyrene, a co-polymer derived from styrene and acrylonitrile, polymethyl methacrylate and polyethylene.
