Abstract

973, 222. Development of photographic emulsions. W. ZINDLER, [trading as LUMOPRINT ZINDLER K. G.]. March 6, 1961 [March 17, 1960], No. 8104/61. Heading G2A. In a method of developing a photographic emulsion, the developer substance is distributed heterogeneously as solid material in a normally solid body of flux material, the flux material being converted to a liquid state by the application of heat and/or liquid, and then being brought into relatively moving contact with the emulsion. In the arrangements shown, the developer material is provided in the form of a so-called "chemical" roller (Fig. 10). This has an axially fluted core 95, on which is an outer chemical layer 96 in which the developer material is bonded with a readily fusible or soluble material. The particular example given has a mixture of borax and soda crystals. In the arrangement of Fig. 7, this chemical roller is shown as 64, and rotates in contact with a pressure drum 65, the film being fed between them from inlet 69 to outlet 70. The upper drum 65 contains a heater 102, which melts the surface of the lower drum, and so enables the developer material to be applied to the film. Alternatively, or in addition, the surface of the chemical drum can be moistened, either directly or by means of an intermediate roller. The two rollers or drums are spring-biased into contact. The lower roller 64 is power-driven, and the upper drum 65 rotated by contact therewith. The upper drum may be slowed down by a brake, so that there is a stronger frictional effect between the two rollers than that caused merely by driving contact. Fig. 8 shows a double arrangement, the first chemical roller 76 containing developer substances and the second chemical roller 77 containing fixing substances. Fig. 9 shows a different double arrangement, for a transfer process, comprising chemical rollers 81, 82 and pressing or heating drums 83, 84. The two films are subsequently pressed together between rollers 92, 93.
