973,204. Gas burners. H. MAILE. March 7, 1963 [March 14, 1962; Aug. 4, 1962], No. 9042/63. Headings F4F and F4T. A gas burner comprises a pilot flame chamber 35 surrounded by an annular gas chamber 21 surrounded by an annular air chamber 25, the pilot flame chamber being formed on the end of an inner cylindrical chamber 16 accommodating an ignition electrode 15 and a thermocouple 19. Gas is supplied by pipes 12, 48 to the cylindrical chamber 16 and air is supplied thereto through an aperture in an end disc 38 of the chamber. The other end of the chamber is closed by a disc 17 having a flame opening 18. Gas is supplied to the annular chamber 21 by a pipe 13 and passes through apertures 22 into an annular mixing chamber 30 supplied with air through holes 28 controlled by a U-shaped ring 26 having holes 27 and movable on the outer wall 24 of the annular gas chamber 21. The mixture passes through a sieve ring 29 into a combustion chamber 34 formed by a nozzle 31. Air flows from the air chamber 25 into the nozzle 31 and is controlled by moving the nozzle 31 longitudinally to alter the gap between the inner edge of the nozzle and the U- shaped ring 26. The air is supplied by a blower and is controlled by a valve. A switch may be actuated by the air valve or by an air flow indicator to control an electromagnetic valve controlling the gas supply. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the outer wall of the annular gas chamber extends beyond the end of the pilot flame chamber to form a second mixing chamber and the extension comprises a lattice jacket located on a perforated sleeve. The webs of the lattice jacket are bent to cause turbulence of the gas mixture. An oblique deflector ring is set up in the first mixing chamber. In a second modification, Figs. 6, 7, 8 (not shown), two annular gas chambers are provided and are fed separately through electromagnetic valves. Both chambers discharge into a single mixing chamber. The blower has an air inlet valve adjusted by an electromagnet. A limit pin determines the maximum opening of the valve. Two or more burners, as described, may be arranged side by side, the jackets of the burners having openings to allow the combustion chambers and the air chambers to communicate, Figs. 9-12 (not shown). The blower and blower motor may be secured to the jacket of the burner or may be remote therefrom and connected thereto by a conduit. The burner jacket has a transparent plate.
