Abstract

Naphthalene hydrocarbons are separated from mixtures also containing benzene hydrocarbons and aliphatic hydrocarbons by solvent extraction in which an extract of aromatic hydrocarbons in a polar solvent is obtained by contacting the mixture with a 5-membered heterocyclic compound selected from alkylene carbonates, gamma lactones and lactams and contacting the extract so formed with a paraffinic counter-solvent immiscible in the polar solvent and recovering naphthalenes from the polar solvent. In one embodiment the two contacting operations are carried out separately, the extract and raffinate from the first stage being separated and the extract being passed to the second stage; alternatively, the two are carried out in a single counter-current contacting step, introducing polar solvent at the top, paraffinic counter-solvent at the bottom and hydrocarbon feed intermediately. The polar solvent is preferably introduced dry and water introduced during the contact with counter-solvent, preferably in stages, up to a total of 15% by weight of the polar solvent. The volume ratio of polar solvent to hydrocarbon feed may be 0.3-3.5 and the volume ratio of polar solvent to paraffinic counter-solvent may be 0.3-7.0. Temperatures up to 125 DEG C. may be used. Naphthalenes are preferably recovered by adding water to the solvent, if necessary adding also an oil to prevent solidification of the naphthalene. Specified polar solvents are ethylene, propylene and chloropropylene carbonate, butyrolactone, valerolactone and crotonolactone, and butyrolactam (2-pyrrolidone) and its N-methyl derivative. The paraffinic counter-solvent may be propane, n-heptane, n-dodecane or a paraffinic mixture.
