Abstract

Aromatic extracts obtained by treating a petroleum distillate with a solvent such as sulphur dioxide, are concentrated or freed from non-aromatic hydrocarbons by treating with a paraffinic solvent in the presence of liquid sulphur dioxide. The paraffinic solvent used is substantially insoluble in liquid sulphur dioxide and in the aromatic part of the extract, and is preferably of higher boiling point than the extract. Suitable paraffinic solvents are aromatic-free petroleum distillates such as spindle oil, or lubricating oil. Aromatic extracts of kerosene or petroleum fractions boiling at 60 to 150 DEG C., obtained by extraction, for example, with sulphur dioxide or with aqueous phenol as described in Specification 273,351, [Class 91], are treated. When the solvent used in the extraction is not sulphur dioxide, the solvent should be removed before treating the extract. Example: a heavy lubricating oil, a dewaxing filtrate, or a transformer oil is mixed with an aromatic extract from kerosene, and the mixture extracted with two lots of sulphur dioxide. The raffinate after treatment with acid and a bleaching earth and distilling forms a refined kerosene and a residual lubricating oil. The extracts are combined, freed from sulphur dioxide, and fractionated to form a motor fuel or a motor fuel component. The raffinate, if desired, may be returned to the extraction process. Extraction may be effected in countercurrent or in a series of mixing and separating vessels or in washing towers as described in Specification 321,200, [Class 91].
