Abstract

972,728. Valves. BECKMAN & WHITLEY Inc. May 9, 1962, No. 17818/62. Heading F2V. [Also in Division G2] A quick-acting gate or shutter comprises a circular disc of electrically conductive material, rotatably supported about a diametral axis, so disposed that the establishment of a magnetic field induces a current in the disc which, by interacting with the said field, causes rotation of the disc. In the form shown, the disc 14 is of aluminium, with pivotal bearings 16 at each end of a diametral axis, and is mounted inside a solenoid 11. When the solenoid is energized, a magnetic field is established as indicated by flux lines 17. These are intercepted by disc 14, causing a current to flow in the disc in circular paths. The interaction between this current and the magnetic field causes the disc to rotate. When the disc is coplanar with the solenoid, the induced current is at a maximum, but the rotational force is zero. When the disc is perpendicular to the solenoid, the induced current is zero, but the rotational force is at a maximum. Thus the optimum condition for rotation is when the disc is at 45 degrees. Control of the movement of the disc is achieved by suitable choice of the duration and shape of the energy pulses applied to the solenoid.
