Abstract

972,643. Peak current measurement; integrating current; gas analyzing apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 14, 1961 [Nov.17, 1960], No. 40707/61. Headings G1N, G1Q and G1U. An arrangement for measuring the separate time integrals of current peaks occurring in a circuit having a high resistance includes integrators, to one of which current is supplied during a current peak, and a device for measuring the voltage across the said one integrator. Each integrator consists of one of a series of capacitors which are switched in and out of the circuit successively by a means automatically operated by voltage pulses derived by the differentiation of signals related to the current peaks. The current peaks may be produced by varying the degree of ionisation of a hydrogen flame 3, in which is arranged an electrode 4 energized by a battery 5. One peak charges a condenser 9 through a resistor 6 so that the total amount of current passed in the peak is integrated by the condenser, which integrated value is measured in the device 7. A differentiated pulse is produced from this by a network 16, 17, amplified in the device 18 and used to operate the switch 13 to allow a subsequent current pulse to charge a further condenser 10. The battery 5 may be replaced by a charged large capacity condenser (Fig. 4 not shown). The arrangement may be applied in a method of determining gas compositions, wherein a gas mixture is passed through a chromatographic tube in which differential absorption takes place. This separates the constituents of the gas so that different constituents emerge from the tube at different times, and are passed into the flame 3 through the tube 1, so that its degree of ionisation varies according to the amount of the constituent present.
