Abstract
Trioxane is copolymerized with 0.1 to 60% of the total monomers, of at least one cyclic formal of an olefinically unsaturated dihydric alcohol containing 4 to 6 carbon atoms at -50 to +100 DEG C. A Lewis acid or an acid halide may be used as catalyst. Specified cyclic formals are butene-(3)-1:2-diol formal, pentene-(2)-1:4-diol formal, 2-methylbutene-(2)-1:4-diol formal, and butene-(2)-1:4-diol formal (preferred) as well as mixtures of two or more such formals. The copolymerization may take place in solution or suspension, using aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, halohydrocarbons or ethers, or in bulk. Specified catalysts include boron trifluoride and its complexes, and the diazonium fluoroborates e.g. para-nitro-phenyl diazonium fluoroborate as well as the compounds mentioned in Specification 943,684. The copolymers may be sulphur vulcanised.
