Abstract
972,389. Single sideband amplitude modulators; automatic phase control systems. MINISTER OF AVIATION. June 7, 1963 [June 12, 1962], No. 22490/62. Drawings to Specification. Headings H3A and H3R. In an SSB transmitter, a master oscillator is by a phase-locked loop including a frequencychanging stage, controlled to follow in phase, by a phase discriminator, the instantaneous phase modulation of the SSB carrier after limiting, then its output amplitude modulated by the detected amplitude modulation of the SSB carrier. The output may be therefore adjusted in frequency, continuously or in steps, by adjusting the frequency changer local oscillator or selecting one of several crystalcontrolled local oscillators. The detected amplitude modulation may be adjusted in phase by a network before application to the modulation state, e.g. a Class C type, preceded by a Class C carrier amplifier. If the SSB carrier is derived by a filter from a balanced modulator and since the master oscillator will not then be locked to any carrier during absence of modulation, a small carrier frequency component may be included in the output of the SSB filter; or a low amplitude tone signal in the centre of the speech band may be continuously present in the modulation input.
