A variable-frequency supply for varying the speed of a three-phase synchronous motor 1 comprises the difference frequency derived from modulators 9, 10, 11, fed by a fixed oscillator 6 and a variable oscillator 3 controllable by a D.C. signal at 2. Phase shifters 7, 8 introduce Œ 120 degrees phase shift in the supply to modulators 10, 11. The modulators are preferably ring-type. If the frequency range of the variable oscillator 3 includes the fixed frequency 6, the motor may be reversed.
