In a method of unwinding a strand 12 continuously from successive helically wound packages 7, 5 the strand is pulled downwardly from the interior of a vertically-disposed helically wound package 7 the other end 25 of the package, which lies on the outside thereof, being attached to the inner end 23 of an adjacent, similar but horizontally-disposed package 5; when the package 7 is completely unwound the package 5 is placed in the vertical position and a further package installed in the horizontal position and its inner end is attached to the outer end of the package 7. A moulded plastic base 3 is provided with suitable recesses 6, 4 to support the packages in the respective vertical and horizontal positions and with grommets 8,10 to guide the strand 12 to an adjustable tensioning device 11 mounted in a further recess 9 in the base 3. The tensioning device comprises two pairs of dished plates 17 supported on rods 15,16 mounted on a rotatable plate 13. Movement of the plate 13 adjusts the amount of contact between the strand 12 and the rods 15,16 and the plates 17. The strand which as described is a multifilamentary glass strand passes through a further grommet 18 to a common guide eyelet for a plurality of such strands (Fig. 1 not shown) and thus to a tape making machine (not shown). Breakage or a strand can be rectified by placing adhesive on the broken end and attaching it thereby to an adjacent unbroken strand.
