Abstract

<PICT:0971918/C1/1> Apparatus for mixing a liquid with a powder in a reactive or non-reactive mixing process (consisting of spraying the liquid into a downwardly trickling curtain of the powder and guiding the powder in two mixing cycles which meet at one point), comprises a drum a, b in the form of a double cone or double pyramid with a common base c, rotatable about an axis through the apices; there are internal fitments i and an opening d at one apex for a spray nozzle e. The other apex may have a vent h for air and dust, and there may be a filling and discharge opening k. In operation the powder is guided towards the apices by the internal fitments i and returned to the centre by the conical walls. The vent h may communicate with a cyclone separator, the recovered powder from which is recycled, if desired, with added fresh material through a return pipe extending through the opening f. The apparatus is discharged by reversing the direction of rotation. Examples relate to the preparation of tri-sodium pyrophosphate tetrahydrate by spraying 4 mols. of water into an equimolar mixture of disodium and tetrasodium pyrophosphate; of a mineral food additive consisting of a mixture of calcium carbonate and dicalcium phosphate by spraying phosphoric acid on to feed line containing carbon dioxide; and of low bulk weight detergents by spraying an aqueous solution of one or more surface-active agents on pyrophosphates and polyphosphates or alkali sulphates as hydrate formers. Examples of non-reaction processes are the spraying of anhydrous non-ionic surface-active agents on to low bulk density phosphates in order to convert them to voluminous powders; similarly lecithum may be converted to dry powder form by spraying into hydroxy apatite.
