Abstract
A hardenable composition comprises a hardenable low molecular weight polysulphide polymer, 5-100% by weight based on the polysulphide, of factice, and a curing agent the active ingredient of which is lead dioxide. The curing agent may also contain a small amount of a fatty acid, e.g. oleic or stearic acid and a softening agent, e.g. dibutyl phthalate or a chlorinated hydrocarbon known under the trade name "Arochlor." Fillers or pigments, e.g. TiO2, powdered aluminium, chalk, silica or carbon black may also be incorporated. In example (1) liquid and solid factice are mixed and lead dioxide, stearic acid and dibutyl phthalate are added. 60 parts of the mixture with 100 parts of polysulphide gives a paste, which hardens in 1 hour or less at 40-60 DEG C. (2) is similar but contains TiO2 and/or Al powder. (3) uses liquid factice and calcium carbonate as filler, (4) uses solid factice without a filler. (5) is similar to (1) but omits the stearic acid and dibutyl phthalate. The products are useful as sealing or caulking compositions.
