Abstract

971,647. Making caps; punching; stamping. AUTOCROWN CORPORATION Ltd. Aug. 10, 1962 [June 21, 1961], No. 22391/61. Headings B3A, B3Q and B3W. [Also in Divisions B6 and B8] ' Metal bottle caps are blanked out from a sheet, on which the cap printing may have been lithographed, into portable magazines, the magazines being clipped into forming presses which shape them in three stages by punches and dies. Blanking. (Figs. 3, 13, 14, 15.)-A sheet 50 from a stack 43 is placed manually on a bed 51 beneath a hold-down plate 52 where spring- loaded dogs 56 on two arms 54 of a reciprocating carriage 55 progressively engage its rear edge 50a to feed it forward step-by-step. The blanking means comprises six plungers 85 on a head 71 co-operating with female dies 80, the cup blanks 3011 with finger tab portions 38<SP>1</SP> being accumulated in batches by spring stops (Fig. 17, not shown) prior to entering removable tubular magazines 91, which are stored on a turntable 44, Fig. 15. A kicker 87 forwards the waste sheet. In an alternative arrangement, the blanks are stamped from a continuous band and remain joined by a central strip during the remaining forming processes. This arrangement is not illustrated. Shaping. (Figs. 2, 18, 19.)-Magazines 91 of blanks are removed as required from the turntable 44 and are clipped into a duplex shaping press. The column of blanks 3011 is fed upwardly by a weight-loaded arm 102 and the uppermost is removed by a reciprocating slider 125 having suction gripping means (see also Division B3). Each blank is engaged by gripping bars 143, which are constrained by pins 144 circuiting in slots 145 to follow a closed oblong path, and are fed to the first of three shaping plungers 140, 141, 142, carried on a vertically reciprocating head 46. The plungers co-operate with dies 150, 160, 170 and in operating, depress ejectors 152, 158, 165 which rise with the plungers to present the blank to the bars 143 for transmit to the next stage. The ejectors 158, 165 include suction retaining means or may, according to the Provisional Specification, include magnetic means. The first plunger 140 dishes the cap, the second 141 turns up at right angles the tab flange and corrugates the tab, the third 142 presses downwards the tab flange to the final form. The head 46 also carries a plastics gasket bead injection nozzle 172 (see Division B8) which operates at the next stage of movement of the cap. Specification 971,648 is referred to.
