The lighting system of a motor vehicle is provided with a selector switch 16 so that the side and rear lamps 26, 28 on one side of the vehicle, or 30, 32 on the other side are selectable for parking purposes, the system being further provided with a switch 42, closed when the band-brake is released, which ensures that whatever the position of the selector switch 16, all the side and rear lamps are illuminated when the vehicle is being driven. A warning lamp 58 connected via an ignition switch 60 is provided as a warning to the driver that the switch 16 should be returned to the central position when driving. A lamp 34 illuminates the rear number plate.
