Abstract

971,250. Polymerizing vinyl chloride. DEUTSCHE SOLVAY-WERKE G.m.b.H. June 19, 1963 [June 22, 1962], No. 24468/63. Heading C3P. Vinyl chloride polymers are manufactured by a process in which vinyl chloride and a neutral ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid are first partially polymerized in bulk in the presence of a catalyst soluble in the monomer, and the polymerization is then completed in aqueous suspension in the presence of a dispersing agent. The bulk polymerization is preferably continued for a quarter to third of the duration of a comparative suspension polymerization. Examples describe the copolymerization of vinyl chloride with (1-10) ethylhexyl acrylate and (11-13) diethylhexyl fumarate in the presence of dilauroyl peroxide and aqueous solutions of partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate.
