In making ice-cream in the freezing compartment of a refrigerator, an open-topped container holding an ice-cream mix is placed in the said compartment, the mix is then agitated or stirred and the ambient air is simultaneously circulated. Apparatus for making ice-cream according to the invention comprises an open-topped bowl 36, Figs. 1 and 2, holding an icecream mix 35, a casing 10 supported on but not completely closing the mouth of the bowl and housing an electric motor 28 actuated by current from batteries 27 or from supply mains. A spindle 33, connected to the drive shaft of the motor, extends downwardly from the casing and carries, at its lower end disposed in the mix, a stirrer 34 and, in the air above the mix, a propeller or fan 39. The stirrer 34 is, preferably, a friction fit on the free end of the shaft 33, so that the stirrer can be adjusted to suit the depth of the mix in the bowl and the shaft 33 can still turn if the stirrer is seized in the ice-cream. A switch 29 is provided at one end of the casing. The casing 10 may be made of plastic material and may comprise a cover 12, 32 and a base 11 provided with a housing 21 for the motor, upstanding ribs 25 and depending lugs 15. The spindle 33 and the stirrer 34 may be made of nylon or polypropylene. Heat-insulating blocks 26 30 and 31, e.g. of expanded polystyrene, may be fitted inside the casing to prevent freezing of the batteries.
