Abstract

An additive for lubricating compositions comprises a reaction product of an acidic phosphosulphurised polybutylene (i.e. the reaction product of an oil soluble polybutylene of molecular weight of 750-5,000 with phosphorus pentasulphide) with an organic di- or polyamine. The amines contain two or more primary amino groups or have the formula <FORM:0970880/C3/1> <FORM:0970880/C3/2> or <FORM:0970880/C3/3> where R1, R2 and R4 are H or CH3; R3 is an alkylene radical which may be substituted or is (CH2CH2NH)xCH2CH2 R5 is CH3 or CH2CH2OH or together with R4 is =(CH2CH2) O, R6 is H, CH3, CH2CH2OH, CH2 CH2 NH2 or (CH2CH2NH)xCH2CH2NH2 and x is 1-100. A number of amines are listed.) The polybutylene may be polymers or copolymers of n- or isobutylene, and may have a molecular weight of 1100. The phosphosulphurised polybutylene may have a molecular weight of 2500-2600 and may contain 3.8% phosphorus and 7.3% sulphur. The phosphosulphurised polybutylene may be mixed with phosphosulphurised wool grease before treatment with the amine. The polymer product may be compounded with a lubricating oil which may contain a zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate, a secondary aromatic amine, an alkyl phenol and benzotriazole. The Provisional Specification describes also the phosphosulphurising and treatment with an amine of polymethacrylates and/or polyfumarates.ALSO:A lubricant composition comprises a major proportion of lubricating oil and a minor proportion, e.g. 0.1-10%, of the reaction product of an acidic phosphosulphurized polybutylene with an organic di- or polyamine, including cyclic amines. The oil may be a light spindle oil. The composition may contain an antioxidant e.g. an oil soluble zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate, a secondary aromatic amine, an alkyl phenol and a copper deactivator, e.g. benzotriazole. The polymeric additive may contain a phosphosulphurized wool grease which has been treated with the organic amine.
