Abstract

970,796. Inflated cushions. LLOYD'S PACKING WAREHOUSES (HOLDINGS) Ltd. July 22, 1963 [Aug. 20, 1962], No. 31855/62. Heading A4M. [Also in Division B8] Inflatable cushions for use as packing material are made by securing together layers of material so as to define one or more separate compartments between them and by providing in each compartment before its final closure, one or more substances which may subsequently be activated in a non-reversible manner so as, by chemical or physical change, to liberate a gas and thereby inflate the compartment. Activation may be by heat, X-ray, light or other radiation or may be by pressing together layers having chemical re-agents applied thereto. The gas may be carbon dioxide or nitrogen. The substance may be sodium bicarbonate either, provided on a metal carrier for subsequent heating by electric current or, mixed with carbon black into a paste applied to the layers by localised printing, or in the form of a pellet. The packing material may be rolled or stacked in non-inflated condition prior to use.
