Abstract

A detergent additive for oil compositions is prepared by reacting CO2, SO2, CS2 or H2S with a suspension in mineral oil of a polyvalent metal, preferably hydrated, oxide or hydroxide, a phosphosulphurised hydrocarbon, a phenolic compound which is an alkyl phenol, an alkyl phenol sulphide or a salt thereof, not more than 0.5% by wt. of water, based on the total weight of the reaction mixture, being present, and the temperature being substantially above the boiling point of water, e.g. 245-325 DEG F. The phosphosulphurised hydrocarbon may be derived from the reaction of P2S5 with a heavy petroleum fraction, distillate or residue containing less than 5% of aromatics or within a polyolefin of molecular weight 500-200,000 and containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms per olefin monosilse.g. polybutene, the reaction product may be blown with nitrogen. Preferred metal oxides and hydroxides are those of the alkaline earth metals. Preferably 100 parts by weight of phosphosulphurised hydrocarbon are reacted with 30-100 parts of phenolic compound, 3-20 equivalents of metal base per equivalent of phenolic compound and 3-20 equivalents of CO2, SO2, CS2 or H2S. The preferred ratio of metal equivalents to total acid equivalents is 1.5:1 to 20:1.ALSO:A detergent additive for oil compositions is prepared by reacting CO2, SO2, CS2 or H2S with a suspension in mineral oil of a polyvalent metal, phosphosulphurized hydrocarbon, a phenolic compound which is an alkyl phenol, an alkyl phenol sulphide or a salt thereof, not more than 0.5% by wt. of water, based on the total weight of the reaction mixture, being present, and the temperature being substantially above the boiling point of water, e.g. 245-325 DEG F. In examples mineral oils containing the additive also contain a zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate.
