Abstract

Sugar boiling is effected continuously in a number of stages connected in series, in which the quality of the massecuite is controlled by varying the amount of vapour supplied to, the pressure existing in, and the amount of thickened juice added in each stage so that the degree of saturation in the liquor flowing from each stage to the subsequent stage is constant, and in which the conditions obtaining in each stage are chosen so as to provide overall crystal growth. The initial stages are carried out under closely controlled substantially constant conditions of fast very low head boiling with good circulation to avoid conglomerate growth and the later stages include the positive displacement of the massecuite. An operational example is described.
