Abstract

970, 534. Sorting by gauging. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 30, 1960 [Oct. 1, 1959], No. 33371/59. Heading G1M. [Also in Division H3] Sheets of material cut from strip 10 by a flying shear 13 are sorted according to thickness and according to whether they possess any visible faults. A flying micrometer 11 measures the strip and if any is off-gauge a signal is sent to a transfer device 19 which stores the signal until that particular part of the strip has reached the shear 13. The signal is then passed through a bi-stable flip flop 20 to an AND gate 21, which also receives signals from a photo-electric device 22 when the trailing ends of newly cut sheets pass it. When two signals are received simultaneously by the gate 21 a signal is passed on to a second transfer device 25 which stores the signal until the trailing end of the corresponding sheet has almost reached a position 27, and then the signal is passed to the inputs of a number of AND gates 33. A further signal is produced whenever a photo-electric device 28 responds to the presence of a sheet, and this signal is passed to the input of one of the gates 33 by the connections A to J, these connections being energized in turn as successive sheets pass by the device 28. If at any time a signal indicating a fault in the strip is present at the input to the gates 33, produced either by the micrometer 11 or by a workman using a device 44, that one which is energized will pass a signal on to a further bistable flip-flop 35, which will energize a corresponding AND gate 36. This gate, however, will remain unresponsive until it receives a "sheet present" signal produced by a photo-electric device 41 situated just before the sorting unit 17. If one of these gates becomes responsive a signal is passed to a solenoid 18 operating a deflector 17. The photo-electric devices 28, 41 are spaced apart a distance greater than the length of the longest sheet to be cut, and the number of parallel paths between the units 33, 35 and 36 exceeds the largest number of sheets that may lie between the devices 28, 41. Means are described for resetting the flipflops.
